Free football prediction pool template — with automatic scoring
A genuinely free, no-sign-up spreadsheet template for running a football prediction pool with friends or coworkers: fixtures, per-player predictions, built-in scoring formulas (3 points exact, 1 point correct outcome), and a leaderboard that totals itself. Works in Excel and Google Sheets. Below it: the house rules that keep pools fair — and the honest reasons pools outgrow spreadsheets.
What's inside
- Predictions sheet — one row per match, columns per player, and points that calculate automatically the moment you enter the actual score.
- Leaderboard sheet — totals per player, always current.
- How-to sheet — setup steps and the fair-play rules, so you can share the file and nobody argues about the rules.
The house rules that keep it fair
- Predictions lock at kickoff. The #1 rule. Any pool without it ends in arguments.
- 3 / 1 / 0 scoring. Exact score beats correct outcome beats nothing — rewards precision without making lucky guesses everything. (Full system, including knockout multipliers and per-sport variants, on our scoring rules page.)
- Knockouts count after extra time. Penalty shootouts score as a draw — decide this before the tournament, not during.
- Late entries get a default. Enter 0-0 for no-shows (or agree on 0 points) — decide once, write it in the file.
Where spreadsheets break (honesty section)
This template fixes the scoring math, but three problems are structural: nothing actually locks predictions at kickoff (you're trusting screenshots and timestamps), someone always breaks a formula by pasting over it, and the organizer becomes the results clerk every single matchday for a whole season. Pools of 4 mates survive this; pools of 15 coworkers usually don't make it past October.
That's the honest pitch for the app version: BeTeam runs the identical pool automatically — fixtures import themselves, predictions genuinely lock at kickoff, points and the leaderboard update live during matches, and the group chat is built in. Free, no real money, and the organizer's weekly workload is zero. During the 2026 World Cup it scored 470,000+ predictions across 3,500+ pools this way.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free template for a football prediction pool?
Yes — the download above, with automatic 3/1/0 scoring formulas and a self-totalling leaderboard. Works in Excel and Google Sheets, no sign-up.
What is a fair scoring system?
3 points exact score, 1 point correct outcome, 0 otherwise, predictions locked at kickoff. Knockouts: score after extra time, shootouts count as a draw.
What usually goes wrong with spreadsheet pools?
Post-kickoff edits, broken formulas, organizer burnout, and late-entry arguments. The rules above mitigate the first and last; the middle two are why pools move to an app.
Is there an app that does this automatically?
Yes — BeTeam, free on iOS and Android, no real money. Same pool, zero admin.
